King hails achievements of military team at Invictus Games Sydney 2018 competitions
AMMONNEWS - His Majesty King Abdullah II received at Al Husseiniya Palace on Thursday, in presence of HRH Crown Prince Hussein Ben Abdullah II, the team of the Hashemite Commission for Disabled Soldiers (HCDS), in recognition of their achievements in the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 competitions for wounded serving and former military personnel, recently held in the Australian city of Sydney with the participation of more than 500 athletes from 18 countries.
During the meeting, which was attended by HRH Prince Mar'ed bin Ra'ad, President of the HCDS, His Majesty expressed his pride in the achievements and results achieved by the team, which reflected the resolve and determination of the Jordanians and their keenness to excel.
His Majesty voiced appreciation to the efforts made in preparation of the team and to all those who contributed to the success of this experiment, especially the Hashemite Commission for Disabled Soldiers.
The Commission's team won nine medals (5 gold, 3 silver, and 1 bronze).
Amani Abdurrahman won two gold medals in the sitting rowing competitions and women's 100m wheelchair races.
Ahmed Barahmeh won two gold medals in the weightlifting competition under 72 kg and the 100m wheelchair race.
Iyad Mestrehi won a gold medal in the long-jump competition.
Uday Shatanaoui won a silver medal in the discus throw competition, while Hayel Al Mahakim won two silver medals for the 100m-200m running competitions. He also won a bronze medal in the 400m running event.
His Highness Prince Mar'ed headed the Jordanian delegation to the Invictus Games Sydney 2018, which included 17 members from the Hashemite Commission for Disabled Soldiers in rowing, weightlifting and volleyball competitions.
Chief of the Royal Court and Adviser to the King, Director of His Majesty's Office attended the meeting.
In a press statement, Amani Abdurrahman and Hayel Al Mahakim expressed their happiness at achieving advanced positions in the Sydney Games, adding meeting with His Majesty gave the HCDS members the determination and strength to continue the path of prgress and achievement.
