King meets U.S. secretary of state

AMMONNEWS - His Majesty King Abdullah II met Tuesday in Washington with U.S. Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, and discussed promoting cooperation and strategic partnership between Jordan and the United States and developments in the Middle East.

The meeting discussed efforts to revive the peace process, as King Abdullah stressed the importance of re-launching serious and effective negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis based on the two-state solution and the Arab Peace Initiative.

The King said there is no alternative to the two-state solution to end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. He pointed out that failure to reach a just and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue will fuel frustration and lead to further violence.

His Majesty also stressed the importance of preserving the historical status quo in Jerusalem, as the failure to do so will have negative consequences for the region as a whole.

The meeting dealt with the latest developments in the Syrian crisis and efforts to sustain the cease-fire in parallel with the work to reach a political solution to the crisis through the Geneva process. His Majesty pointed out to the importance of cooperating with Russia in this regard.

They also discussed the situation in Iraq and efforts to support its stability, in addition to regional and international efforts in the war on terrorism and its gangs, within a holistic strategy, as it threatens global peace and security.

The meeting also tackled the U.S. support to Jordan, to enable it to implement programs and development plans and deal with the repercussions of the region's crises.

The U.S. Secretary of State held a luncheon in honor of His Majesty and the accompanying delegation.
