Planning minister urges Millennium Challenge Corporation to provide aid to Jordan
AMMONNEWS - Minister of Planning and International cooperation Imad Fakhoury called on the US Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) to support Jordan, and take into consideration challenges facing the Kingdom when considering grants to the Kingdom.
Fakhoury made the remarks as he met with a delegation from the MCC led by the MCC's Regional Deputy Vice President for Europe, Asia, Pacific, and Latin America Fatema Z. Sumar.
According to a Planning Ministry statement on Thursday, Fakhoury stressed the importance of providing support to vital projects in a number of sectors in governorates that are affected by the Syrian refugee crisis within the Jordan Response Plan for the Syria Crisis.
He also voiced the government's thanks and appreciation for the support provided by the US to Jordan through various institutions, particularly the MCC grants that help in mitigating the growing impact of water scarcity in the Kingdom.
During the meeting, Fakhoury also discussed with Sumar scopes of cooperation between Jordan and the MCC as well as projects being implemented with the support of the MCC in the water sector, especially that Jordan is one of the poorest countries in the world in terms of water.
The minister also briefed the delegation on the latest developments in the Kingdom and the continued impact of the Syrian crisis on Jordan, that is putting an increasing pressure on various sectors in the Kingdom.
Sumar said that projects that have been implemented by the MCC in the Zaraq governorate are a success story used by the corporation in dealing with other countries.
In 2006, Jordan received a grant from the MCC totalling $25 million that was used to support democratic institutions, enhance public participation, transparency and accountability.
The MCC also provided another $275.1 million to implement water projects in the Kingdom.
