Jordanians Protest $10 Billion Gas Deal With Israel
AMMONNEWS - Protesters marched in Amman on Friday, November 18, to demand cancellation of a $10 billion deal signed in September allowing Jordan’s public electricity utility to import gas from Israel.
According to a reporter at the rally, it was the seventh Friday in a row that protesters marched in the Jordanian capital. Last week, 50 protesters were reportedly detained during the march, but released on the same day.
The Jordan Times reported that the deal is between Jordan’s National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) and Houston-based Noble Energy, which owns a majority share in the Leviathan gas field off Israel’s coast. According to NEPCO, the deal would see more than 40 percent of Jordan’s electricity needs covered, creating an annual savings of $600 million.
