AMMONNEWS - Agriculture minister Reda Khawaldeh Staurday toured forest areas in Ajloun and Jerash, where forest fires over the Eid holidays damaged large areas, and announced measures to fight fires, most of them deliberate.
He said all facilities, including lauders and machinery, will be placed at the disposal of authorities in northern governorates, particularly Ajloun and Jerash, which are regularly exposed to fires, many of them arson, that consume hundreds of dunums of forest land.
The minister called for collective efforts by administrative governors, civil defence, private sector and forestry authority to preserve forests, as a national resource, and prevent violations, including fires and logging.
He said the ministry would not tolerate any arson or other assaults whatsoever, and vowed to 'closely pursue the perpetrators'.
Raed Adwan, Ajloun forest department director, said the holiday fires, which had burned over 160 dunums of forests and dry grass land, were put out in record speed, adding that agriculture ministry teams were on constant alert to deal with any encroachments on forests.
