AMMONNEWS - The Jordanian Ministry of Labor announced that it has seized over 14,000 foreign workers since the beginning of the year who were found to be in violation of labor laws and permits.
A source at the Ministry told Ammon News on Friday that the ministry, in cooperation with the Public Security Department, has found 14,077 foreign workers to be in violation of labor laws and lacked proper work permits, including 5,229 Syrian nationals and 7,296 Egyptian nationals.
The source noted that 1,955 foreign workers from various nationalities were deported back to their countries since the beginning of 2013 for violating labor laws.
132 domestic workers were apprehended from the time period of August 14th until October 8th, including 86 from the Philippines, 18 from Sri Lanka, and 17 from Indonesia.
The Ministry of Labor had recently concluded a campaign to regulate the affairs of foreign workers found in violation of labor laws, aimed to control the numbers of foreign workers who lack proper work permits and who escape from their documented jobs.
An estimated 1.5 million foreign laborers are currently working in Jordan, the majority of whom are of Egyptian and Syrian nationalities.
The Jordanian Ministry of Labor had recently suspended bringing in foreign workers to Jordan from all sectors, with the exception of domestic workers, with the aim of regulating the arrangements of foreign laborers.
