Jordan 'strongly' objects to Syrian errant missiles on border towns
AMMONNEWS - The Jordanian government on Sunday addressed the Syrian authorities in strong objection against the occasional errant missile shells that fall on Jordanian border towns as a result of the heavy fighting in the neighboring country.
Jordan's government spokesperson Mohammad al-Momani said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent a memo of strong objection to the Syrian Embassy in Amman, stressing in it the need to take all the necessary measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
The memo mentioned that an errant missile fell on the dome of a local mosque in the border city of Ramtha on Thursday night, resulting from the ongoing fighting between Syrian regime forces and the Free Syrian Army forces near the Syrian-Jordanian border, which led to damages to the mosque.
Earlier this month, several missile shells reportedly fired from inside the Syrian territories fell nearby schools in the northern badia towns of Kom al-Ahmar, al-Hisan, and al-Qate' in Mafraq governorate, leading the local education department to evacuate the schools and suspend classes for several days.
The schools' window glass shattered as a result of the impact of the shelling on the border region with Syria.
Another errant missile fell inside the yard of Umm al-Sarb school on September 16.
Jordan shares over 370 kilometers of borders with Syria, with the heavy fighting in the neighboring country being heard and felt inside Jordanian border towns.
Last September, five rocket shells struck near inhabited areas in Ramtha, and about 9 more shells hit areas nearby the borders. One child was injured in the incident that caused major havoc and fear among border-area residents.
