Protests in Karak, Irbid blast govt policies, price hikes
AMMONNEWS - Several protests were held in the southern governorate of Karak on Friday against government policies and continued price hikes amid difficult economic conditions facing citizens.
In Karak, three protests were held following Friday midday prayer in the towns of Sarfa, Faqou', and Southern Mazar, where demonstrators blasted the government's policies of raising prices, and for what protesters perceived as continued endemic corruption in government institutions.
Protesters called for dissolving the Lower House of Parliament and sacking the current government of Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour, accusing both institutions of failing to listen to demands of the people and adopting policies that further exacerbate the difficult economic conditions afflicting the country and its citizens.
A statement issued by the Karak Youth and Popular Pro-Reform Movement read during the protest held the government responsible for the 'miserable conditions' facing citizens, citing rampant corruption, poverty, unemployment, and increased incidents of social violence.
The statement also blasted what it considered 'failure' of the Lower House of Parliament and the government, and called on the latter to retract from its decision to raise prices and to carry out real and tangible political and economic reforms.
Another protest was also held in the Southern Mazaar district following Friday midday prayer, calling for serious efforts to implement political and economic reforms.
Protesters also called for reconsidering privatization of important state assets, and to legislate a new 'representative' electoral law, in addition to combating corruptions and putting corrupt officials on trial.
Similarly in the northern governorate of Irbid, a demonstration organized by the Jordanian Muslim Brotherhood blasted government policies of raising prices and called on it to look for alternatives that do not exacerbate the living conditions of citizens.
Protesters called for political and economic reforms, combating corruption, and reclaiming state institutions that have been privatized and state funds embezzled by corrupt officials.
All of Friday's protests ended peacefully as security forces worked to redirect traffic and maintain order during the demonstrations.
