12 injured in Tawjihi festive firing, 1450 traffic violations in Amman
AMMONNEWS - Twelve people were injured Thursday night, sustaining bullet wounds from festive firing on the occasion of announcing the results of the Tawjihi (General Secondary School Certificate) examinations for the 2013 summer session.
A security source told Ammon News shortly after midnight Thursday/Friday that the number of injuries reached 12 people since the results were announced shortly after sunset.
Public Security Department Press Spokesperson Amer Sartawi said that 8 people were injured in the capital Amman in festive firing and fire work accidents.
Meanwhile, a stray bullet from festive firing struck a girl in the southern Red Sea port city of Aqaba.
A security source said that the 16-year old girl sustained a bullet wound in her shoulder as a result of a stray bullet fired after announcing the Tawjihi results.
The source added that the injured were all taken to hospitals and are in stable condition, Al Ghad daily reported.
Meanwhile, in the capital Amman, traffic police issued 1450 traffic violations Thursday night since the official results were announced during a press conference held at the Ministry of Education.
Sources at the Amman Traffic Police told Ammon News that traffic patrol units issued the violations over hazardous driving, and to vehicles whose passengers were leaning out of car windows, and vehicles driving in motorcades.
Traffic police also blockaded major intersections, including the Abdoun Circle, and worked to re-direct traffic amid a heavy traffic jam.
Every year, Jordanians express their joy at high school students passing the dreadful Tawjihi examinations to pass secondary school.
Yet festive measures are often dangerous and unlawful, including festive firing, fire works, and hazardous driving in motorcades.
Despite these measures being illegal, every year registers numerous injuries and deaths as a result of the festive phenomena.
