Syria ready for refugees to return from Lebanon: Aoun
BEIRUT: Syria is ready to receive the return of its citizens who fled the violence in the country and are living as refugees in Lebanon, Free Patriotic Movement leader Michel Aoun has said.
Aoun said the pledge came during a meeting Thursday with Syria’s Minister for National Reconciliation Ali Haidar.
Haider “assured me that Syrian authorities are willing to receive Syrian refugees and that the doors are open to this issue according to the conditions set forth by the refugees,” Aoun said in remarks published on his party’s website.
He said Haidar also expressed his country’s willingness to provide the refugees with housing “and everything they need.”
Millions of Syrians have fled their country because of years of intense fighting between the regime and rebel forces.
Over 600,000 Syrian refugees are assisted by the United Nations in Lebanon and many more Syrians aren’t receiving official aid.
