King receives Italian FM, EU Commissioner for Int'l Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid
AMMAN (Petra)- His Majesty King Abdullah II on Tuesday received Italian Foreign Minister Emma Bonino and the European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid Kristalina Georgieva to discuss issues related to the Middle East.
His Majesty stressed the importance of the European role, especially the Italian role, in supporting efforts to bring Palestinians and Israelis back to negotiations which, according to the King, must be based upon the two-state solution as the only way to end the conflict and establish security and stability in the region.
Furthermore, His Majesty cautioned that continuous Israeli unilateral measures, especially its repeated aggressions against the holy sites in Jerusalem and building settlements, will undermine chances of reviving the peace process.
Regarding the Syrian crisis, the King noted that Jordan is shouldering burdens that are both heavy and increasing, while straining its limited resources and infrastructure as a result of the influx of Syrian refugees, and urged the international community to continue assuming its responsibilities to support the country's assistance to refugees.
Further, His Majesty reiterated Jordan's firm stand on the Syrian crisis, which supports efforts to reach a transitional and comprehensive political settlement for the crisis to end the suffering of the Syrian people and save the region from the dangerous repercussions of this crisis.
During the meeting, the Italian and the EU officials commended His Majesty's efforts to achieve peace in the Middle East and praised the King's leadership in implementing reforms in the Kingdom.
The two officials said Italy and the EU realize the size of the burdens taken on by Jordan as a result of the influx of Syrian refugees to the country, affirming their commitment, in coordination with other countries and international organizations, to continue their support for the Kingdom as it provides relief assistance to the refugees.
