House Speaker: Other legislations take priority over Elections Law
AMMONNEWS - Speaker of the House on Sunday said that Parliament has to prioritize legislating other important laws before considering amending the elections law.
House Speaker Saad Hayel Srour said during a House session on Sunday that Parliament has 'more than three years ahead of it to work on amending the law, we ought to give priority to other laws that have a time-frame priority.'
Jordan elected it's House of Representatives in January 2013 for a four-year term.
Despite introducing amendments to the controversial Single Non-Transferable Vote law, more commonly referred to as the 'one-person one vote' law, many in Jordan nonetheless considered that the amended law fell short of introducing real democratic and fair representation reforms.
Srour's comments came in response to reports that Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour had commented during a meeting with correspondents on Saturday that the government is considering proposing a new parliamentary elections law.
'The House decides what it considers more suitable,' Srour said.
