Mutah University clashes renew despite tribal figures intervention
AMMONNEWS - Clashes that re-erupted at Mutah University, in the southern governorate of Karak, renewed on Sunday afternoon despite the efforts of tribal leaders and elders to intervene to calm the clashing students.
Police and gendarmerie forces were dispatched to the university's southern and northern gates in an attempt to prevent further escalation of violence.
Meanwhile, crowds of students gathered by the southern gate, as residents from outside campus attempted to get involved in the clashes.
Earlier on Sunday, a fight between students at Mutah University in the southern governorate of Karak renewed after campus security managed to contain Thursday's clashes where three students sustained minor injuries.
Students from two different tribes from Karak clashed within the premises of the university campus, where students reportedly hurled rocks at each other and used sticks and batons in the fight, according to eye-witness statements.
No details regarding the cause of the fight have been given yet.
The incident is part of an alarming and increasing phenomenon of university violence, a few months after university clashes at Al Hussein bin Talal University in southern Ma'an governorate claimed the lives of four people and left dozens injured in late April.
The alarming phenomenon of university violence was highlighted by King Abdullah II during a speech at a graduation ceremony at the very same Mu'tah University's military wing last week.
The King had urged both government agencies and civil society to cooperate in an effort to instate the rule of law to contain social and university violence.
