Arab parliament calls for international protection of occupied East Jerusalem
CAIRO (Petra) – The Arab Parliament on Saturday condemned the escalating Israeli attacks in the occupied Palestinian lands, the latest of which was the storming of Arab East Jerusalem's Al Aqsa Mosque compound by Jewish settlers and the arrest of Grand Mufti of Jerusalem Mohammad Hussein.
President of the Arab Parliament Ahmad Jarwan also urged the United Nations, the Arab league and the Organisation for Islamic Cooperation to act promptly to stop the ongoing Israeli assaults, the building of settlements and the construction of the West Bank separation wall.
He said in a statement that such Israeli actions were meant to put more pressure on the livelihood of Palestinians, Judaize Jerusalem by evicting its Arab inhabitants and bring the city under the control of the 'Zionist entity'.
The statement reiterated the illegitimacy of Israel’s measures implemented in land occupied by Israeli forces since 1967, stressing the need for the U.N. Security Council to convene to take 'necessary' action, including providing international protection to Jerusalem and safeguarding its Arab identity.
It also warned that Israel's attempts to exploit the turmoil in Arab countries would not dissuade Arabs from demanding its withdrawal from all occupied territories and the setting up of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
