Jordan's Communists demonstrate on Labor day for reforms
By Mohammad Abu Hmaed
AMMONNEWS - Jordanian activists from Communist and leftist movements on Thursday demonstrated in downtown Amman to mark the international Labor Day.
The demonstrators marched from Al Husseini Mosque in downtown Amman to Al Nakhil Square, calling for labor legislations that protect workers and for restoring the state's role in reviving the economic and social conditions of citizens.
Slogans in the demonstration held under the banner of 'Bread, Freedom, Social Justice,' and organized by the Jordanian Communist Union, called for combating poverty, unemployment and the brain drain of Jordanian human capital.
Police during the demonstration prevented local traders and shopkeepers in downtown from attacking the demonstrators. Shopkeepers were surprised when two demonstrators took place in the vital downtown district, one in the morning and another Thursday evening.
Shopkeepers blasted the demonstrations, saying that such events negatively affect their business and deters shoppers and tourists from the district.
Police formed a barrier between the shopkeepers and demonstrators and prevented clashes.
Meanwhile, a youth pro-reform movement called for a protest on Friday to be held in downtown Amman following Friday midday prayer.
