21 deaths due to heater accidents last winter, PSD warns

05-12-2024 10:27 AM

Ammon News - The Public Security Directorate (PSD) on Thursday published an awareness video, in which it warned of what it described as a “fatal mistake” that caused the death of 21 people last year.

The Directorate indicated that during the winter season, heaters are often used for extended periods without proper ventilation, leading to a buildup of colorless and odorless carbon dioxide while depleting oxygen levels. As a result, individuals inhale contaminated air, becoming weak and unable to function, whether they are awake or sleeping with the heater on.

It also cautioned that inhaling gas for 3 to 15 minutes can lead to suffocation. The Directorate repeated its safety recommendations for using fireplaces, including keeping children away from them, not refueling while they are burning, avoiding their use for cooking or heating water, ensuring rooms are ventilated periodically, and refraining from bringing firewood pallets into the home.
