Ammon News - Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh and the Iraqi Prime Minister, Muhammad Sudani, held talks Monday in Baghdad on mechanisms for strengthening strategic cooperation between Jordan and Iraq.

Khasawneh conveyed the greetings of His Majesty King Abdullah II and His Highness Prince Al-Hussein bin Abdullah II, the Crown Prince, to the Iraqi Prime Minister and the Iraqi and government.

Khasawneh confirmed, in joint statements with his Iraqi counterpart after the talks, that "Jordanian-Iraqi relations are rooted and a strategy that brings us together at the level of leadership, governments, and the two brotherly peoples," adding that the expanded meeting represented an opportunity to deliberate on common political positions.

He added that the talks focused on the continuation of security coordination aimed at combating terrorism and extremism and not allowing any loopholes through which the "abhorrent specter of terrorism might infiltrate, threatening our societies."

They discussed the "need" to take direct and effective practical steps to deal with the drug smuggling challenge across the borders, noting that "this cross-border danger requires the consolidation of cooperation."

Khasawneh talked about Jordan's position on the "need" to find a political horizon for resolving the Palestinian issue based on the two-state solution to establish an independent, fully sovereign, and viable Palestinian state, on the lines of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

He added that Jordan would continue protecting Islamic and Christian sanctities in occupied Jerusalem.

On economic cooperation, Khasawneh and Sudani agreed on the "need to move from the realm of planning to the realm of implementation, whose impact would be felt by the citizens of both brotherly countries and the Arab brothers within the framework of Arab-Arab cooperation mechanisms."
