Jordan, Syria hold 1st meeting to counter cross-border drug smuggling

Ammon News - The joint Jordanian-Syrian committee for cooperation in combating drug smuggling across Syrian border into Jordan held its first meeting on Sunday in Amman.
According to a statement released by Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff, Maj. Gen. Yousef Huneiti and Director of General Intelligence Department (GID), Maj. Gen. Ahmed Husni, headed the Jordanian side, while Syria's Deputy Commander-in-Chief and Minister of Defense, Gen. Ali Mahmoud Abbas, and Director of General Intelligence Directorate (GID), Maj. Gen. Husam Louka, chaired the Syrian delegation.
The meeting discussed cooperation in countering threat of drugs, its sources of production and smuggling, the statement said.
Talks also went over the issue of the parties that organize, run and carry out smuggling operations across borders to Jordan, as well as necessary measures to combat smuggling operations and confront this "escalating" danger to the entire region, the statement added.
Jordan and Syria agreed to hold the committee's first meeting in Amman, during the visit of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, to Syria on July 3.
