Ammon News - Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh participated Sunday in the International Conference on Development and Migration at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs HQ in Rome.

Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni asked, when introducing Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh to deliver his speech at the conference, to convey her greetings to His Majesty King Abdullah II and her appreciation for the "friendly" relations between the two countries, lauding the King's support for regional and global security and stability.

Khasawneh said, "Jordan, the largest refugee-hosting country in the world per capita, continues to provide basic services to Syrian refugees, the same services it provides to its citizens."

He noted that Jordan hosts more than 1.3 million Syrians, 10 per cent of whom live in refugee camps, adding that "despite the economic pressures that have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukrainian crisis, Jordan has been able to provide a decent life for refugees."

Khasawneh discussed the need for international community efforts to address the ramifications of the refugee and migrant crises that affect the region, adding that Jordan was able to provide a "decent life" for refugees.

"Refugees are victims of a fierce crisis that has not yet been resolved," Khasawneh said, adding, "We have done everything we can to make sure that they also do not become victims of need and despair, but this cannot and should not be our sole responsibility because it is far above our ability."

He added, "We need a true partnership, based on cooperation and synergy, to achieve the common goals of our common challenges.

He added that the World Food Programme (WFP) "is a key partner in our efforts to meet the needs of refugees, as it provides small but very important subsidies to hundreds of thousands of refugees at less than $30 per month."

"These refugees will not be able to count on this in September because the World Food Programme does not have the funds to continue its operations, which means that these people will suffer more than they already suffer," he explained.

Khasawneh conveyed the greetings of His Majesty the King to the Italian Prime Minister and the heads and members of the delegations participating in the conference.
