Ammon News - Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi said Tuesday that Israel's massive military attack on Jenin in the occupied West Bank is a dangerous escalation, urging an immediate end to "this aggression".

He said in a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, after talks that an end to the occupation and cessation of moves that perpetuate it are the only way to bring about peace in the region.

Jordan and Turkey, he said, are unanimous on condemnation and rejection of the Israeli aggression against Jenin, which is a major escalation that enflames the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, and that we demand to end immediately.

Safadi also appealed to the international community to act quickly and decisively to stop the aggression, which will only lead to more violence and tension that will impact the entire region.

The unilateral measures that perpetuate the occupation would not change the fact that there will be no peace without the fulfillment of the Palestinian people's rights, and that attempts to distort history will not alter the fact that Israel's occupation is illegitimate under the international law and the international humanitarian standards, Safadi pointed out.

The foreign minister said he and his Turkish counterpart also talked in detail about efforts being exerted to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis, and were unanimous on the need to persevere to solve the crisis and address its humanitarian, security and political consequences.

"As two of the largest countries hosting Syrian refugees, we are concerned with achieving progress in dealing with the refugees' issue, and we agree that the future of Syrian refugees is in their own country", he said, calling for a real international effort to encourage the refugees' voluntary return.

He also warned against dwindling international aid to the refugees, the United Nations organizations caring for them and the host countries.

On bilateral relations, Safadi said he agreed with his Turkish counterpart to hold a meeting of the Jordanian-Turkish Economic Committee soon, and Jordan looked forward to receiving a Turkish trade delegation in the Kingdom this year to discuss prospects to increase cooperation.

"Our relations with Turkeye are important, and we view them with a positive impact not only on our common interests, but on the entire region as well, as we continue working together to increase cooperation and coordination on regional issues of common interest," he added.

Safadi also condemned as a crime the burning of a copy of the Quran in Sweden, which he called "an extremist act that fuels hatred and is unjustified as freedom of speech", stressing that respect of faiths and religious symbols is necessary to promote the culture of dialogue and mutual respect.

During their talks, which dealt with ways of enhancing bilateral relations and regional issues, Safadi conveyed His Majesty King Abdullah's congratulations to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for winning a second term, and also extended his wishes to the new Turkish Foreign Minister.

For his part, the Turkish minister noted his country's ties with Jordan are deep-rooted, and said that consultation between the two countries is continuing regarding the Palestinian issue, the Syrian crisis and other issues of common concern.
