Ammon News - Ministry of Water and Irrigation said attacks on underground wells and water networks are a phenomenon that threatens Jordan's water security, and requires "deterrent" measures to be curbed.

In a statement on Sunday, the ministry said Jordanian courts issued multiple "deterrent" rulings against attackers on Jordan's water resources.

Since beginning of 2023, multiple court rulings were issued against people, who illegally dug wells or attacked water networks and other related violations under Water Authority Law.

These rulings featured stiff penalties, in 65 sentences, primarily four-month prison terms and 20 verdicts of 1-year imprisonment, according to the statement.

Under the rulings, other violators were imprisoned for a 3-year period and requested to pay judicial fees, water prices, and costs of maintaining the sites.

In this context, Jordanian Judicial Council (JJC), in cooperation with Jordan Water Authority (JWA), takes all necessary measures to ensure prosecution of attackers on water resources, by training judicial police at JWA on the mechanism for preparing seizures, in an effort to harness capabilities to reduce these onslaughts.
