Identities of more than 1,200 victims of Turkey's earthquake are still unknown

Ammon News - The consequences of Turkey’s devastating earthquake still cast a shadow and a new tragedy unfolds every day, as an official in the Turkish Ministry of Interior confirmed that it was not possible to determine the identities of 1,297 people who died in the February 6 earthquake, in southeastern Turkey.

More than 50,000 people lost their lives in the earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria, and its epicenter was the city of Kahramanmaraş.

Vedat Marjan, head of the Public Security Department at the General Directorate of Security, said during his presentation of information about the losses after the earthquake before the parliamentary fact-finding committee, that 170 teams and 461 individuals were assigned to work in the region, in order to determine the identities of the victims, according to Russia Today.

The official stated that thanks to the efforts, the identities of 3,755 citizens who lost their lives in the earthquake were identified through fingerprints, and 275 were identified through photos. Marjan said: “We currently have 1,297 citizens whose DNA and fingerprint samples we took. And those we could not identify. Studies are still ongoing against them.”

Two devastating earthquakes struck southern Turkey and northern Syria on the sixth of last February, resulting in thousands of victims in both countries and great damage to housing units and infrastructure.
