PM extends order deferring incarceration of convicted debtors

Ammon News - Prime Minister Bishr Khasawneh on Thursday decided that a 2021 order deferring the incarceration of individuals sentenced to prison terms for defaulting on debts not exceeding JD100,000, will remain in force until September 30, 2022.

In its rationale for Defense Order No. 28 of 2021, issued under Defense Law No. 13 of 1992 which was invoked at the onset of the coronavirus pandemic outbreak in 2020, the government said that it aims to reduce overcrowding in correctional facilities, prevent disease outbreaks among inmates, and assist people in absorbing the financial and economic impact of the pandemic.

The order also delays the execution of prison sentences against those convicted of the crime of check bounce for amounts less than JD100,000.
