The minister told Petra in an interview that five consortiums had been prequalified and had received the project’s technical documents, adding that bidders had been given 6 months to submit their financial and technical offers. According to Najjar, the pipeline-based project, which involves the construction of an intake station and a desalination plant in the Gulf of Aqaba, is expect to cost $2.5 billion. However, the minister said the figure is "not final". He described the project as strategic and a top priority for the Kingdom’s water security, indicating that it will provide the capital and other regions of the Kingdom with around 300 million cubic meters of desalinated seawater annually.
