Ammon News - Jordanian and Syrian ministers and officials on Tuesday concluded meetings held over the course of two days focusing on ways to enhance cooperation in the fields of trade, transport, electricity, agriculture and water resources, Jordan News Agency Petra reported.

The meetings brought together the ministers of industry and trade, water, transport, agriculture, and energy from both countries. The two sides agreed on common visions and understandings to enhance economic cooperation in the said areas.

The ministers underlined the need to come up with a vision to upgrade economic cooperation, overcome any difficulties facing trade exchange and transport, and establish partnership in a host of sectors to serve common interests, according to Petra.

During a separate meeting on trade and industry, it was agreed to share lists of top priority goods to enhance the two-way trade and achieve common interests, in addition to discussing measures to reopen a border Jordanian-Syrian free zone.

On the water front, the ministers agreed to reactivate a joint water committee to follow up on the implementation of an agreement signed in 1987, and to work together to leverage the Yarmouk Basin water.

Additionally, the meetings on transport issues touched on the flow of goods and means to facilitate freight and passenger movement between the two countries and the related fees imposed on trucks.

The ministers announced that Royal Jordanian (RJ) airlines will resume flights between Jordan and Syria as of October 3rd. The issue of the Jordanian-Syrian transport company was also discussed to overcome any present challenges.

In the energy and electricity area, the ministers discussed rebooting the Jordanian-Syrian electrical interconnection line and the need to develop a clear road map to rehabilitate the damaged electrical network on the Syrian side.

The officials also highlighted the importance of a joint Jordanian-Syrian technical committee on energy that began operations last August, following the visit of the Syrian ministers of oil and electricity to Jordan in June of this year.

On agricultural cooperation, the two ministers agreed to exchange documents to develop the scientific, technical and agricultural cooperation agreement in all fields of research, plant and animal health. Lists of agricultural goods and agricultural calendar will be shared to regulate agricultural trade commodity exchange.
