FM partakes in opening session of UN General Assembly

Ammon News - Deputizing for His Majesty King Abdullah II, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi on Tuesday participated in the opening session of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Jordan News Agency Petra reported.

On the sidelines of the session, Safadi held a series of meetings and talks with a number of counterparts and officials attending UNGA, focusing on ties and Middle East issues.

Safadi met with Palestinian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Riyad Al-Malki as part of the Jordanian-Palestinian coordination and action to create a real political horizon that paves the way for ending the occupation and achieving a just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution, according to Petra.

The two ministers discussed ways to mobilize international support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) to be able to continue providing its vital services to more than five million Palestinian refugees in the health, relief, and educational fields in its five areas of operation.

Safadi also held talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria Ramtane Lamamra and discussed with him ways to strengthen Jordanian-Algerian relations in various fields as well as a number of pan-Arab issues.

In a separate meeting, Safadi discussed with his Bahraini counterpart Abdullatif bin Rashid Al-Zayani ways to strengthen relations between the two kingdoms in various domains, in implementation of the directives of His Majesty King Abdullah II and King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.

Safadi and Al-Zayani also reviewed the developments in the region and efforts made to promote pan-Arab solidarity to address common challenges and serve Arab interests and issues.

In another meeting, Safadi met with Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, and affirmed the Kingdom's commitment to advancing cooperation between the two countries in various fields.

The two ministers agreed to continue consultation and coordination in all international and regional forums, especially within the framework of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, in the service of issues of common concern, foremost of which is the Palestinian cause. The two ministers also discussed the latest developments in Afghanistan.

Safadi and Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg discussed prospects for bilateral cooperation and frameworks for enhancing them in all fields. The two ministers agreed to continue consultation and coordination bilaterally and within the framework of the European Union.

The Jordanian minister met with the Permanent Representative of the United States of America to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, and held talks over the phone with US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, focusing on ways to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two friendly countries in various fields, and reviewed regional and international developments.

Safadi valued the support provided by the U.S. to the Kingdom to help it face economic challenges and support its comprehensive development process. He also appreciated the support of the United States of America to the UNRWA, to enable it to continue providing its services in accordance with its UN mandate.

During the talks, they discussed efforts to resolve regional crises and achieve security and stability in the region.

Earlier, Safadi had met the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, and stressed the importance of continued cooperation between the Kingdom and UNHCR to mobilize the necessary international support to help meet the needs of Syrian refugees in the Kingdom.

Safadi underlined the need for the international community to continue to shoulder its responsibilities towards refugees in order to ensure the provision of vital services to them, warning of the repercussions of the decline in international support for refugees.

Safadi also stressed that helping refugees is an international responsibility that should not be borne by the host countries alone.

Grandi praised the Kingdom's humanitarian role in bearing the heavy burdens of the Syrian refugee crisis, meeting their needs and providing them with decent livelihoods.

Safadi also participated in the annual consultative meeting of the Council of the League of Arab States at the level of foreign ministers with the aim of coordinating positions on regional and international issues of common interest.

The minister underlined Jordan's support of pan-Arab action, stressing the need to strengthen coordination regarding regional issues in a manner that serves common Arab interests.
