PM, Iraq Parliament Speaker discuss ties, region

Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh Tuesday welcomed a visiting Iraqi delegation, led by Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mohammad Al-Halbousi, for a discussion of bilateral ties and enhancing cooperation in the various fields.

During the meeting, which was attended by a number of ministers and the Iraqi ambassador to Jordan, the premier reiterated Jordan's support of Iraq, stressing the deep and historical relations and the two countries' interest in further boosting cooperation "to serve the common interests of the two brotherly countries and peoples."

He said the Kingdom supports Iraq's security and stability and its efforts to confront and defeat the "forces of terrorism and darkness."

For his part, the Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament valued His Majesty King Abdullah's stances in support of Iraq and his key and basic role at the Arab, regional and international levels.

He said the Iraqi parliament is keen on supporting stronger ties with Jordan, stressing the importance of intensifying contacts between officials from the two countries towards that goal.

The prime minister and the head of the Iraqi parliament stressed that the summits between His Majesty King Abdullah II, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhemi gave momentum to joint cooperation, stressing the need to build on the outcomes of these meetings to enhance cooperation and integration between the three countries and achieve their common interests.

The meeting also touched on joint strategic projects Jordan and Iraq plan to launch, including the economic city on the two countries common border, an Iraqi oil pipeline to the port of Aqaba and electrical interconnection between the two countries. They agreed that such ventures would enhance common interests and increase the volume of trade exchange between them.
