Ammon News - AMMONNEWS — Jordan announced on Wednesday its recognition of Kosovo, becoming the 61st nation to support Pristina after it declared independence from Serbia last year.
The cabinet announced "the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan's recognition of the Republic of Kosovo" in a brief statement without elaborating, according to AFP.
Jordan is the fourth Sunni Muslim country to extend recognition to Kosovo following Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, the Agence France Press reported.
Many of the dominant ethnic Albanian population of Kosovo follow Sunni Islam.
With Russian support, Serbia still refuses to recognise Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence on February 17, 2008.
But it is recognised by the United States and 22 of the 27 European Union countries.
