Rioters in Irbid Burn Homes, Cars after Man Pronounced Dead

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS –Qusai Ja'arun- Riots erupted Saturday evening in Al Barha in Irbid Governorate, northern Jordan, following clashes on Friday that led to the death of one person.

The man died Saturday evening succumbing to his wounds he sustained in a fight between four people Friday morning.

Relatives of the deceased rioted and set four homes and two cars ablaze, eyewitnesses told Ammon News.

Police and gendarmerie forces cordoned off the area to contain the incident in Irbid.

Meanwhile, a security Atwah (truce period given in tribal code system to main calm between disputing parties) was reached between the two parties.

Six people were arrested for reportedly taking part in the riots and vandalism, a security source told Ammon News.

Rioters set tires on fire, burnt four homes, and destroyed cars in the center of the major road after the man was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The man was reportedly struck in the head with a sharp object, and was rushed to Al Hussein Medical City for treatment, but was pronounced dead on Saturday after a severe blood hemorrhage.

Security and Gendarmerie forces intensified their presence in the town to contain the riots throughout the city according to eye-witnesses, and used tear gas to disperse hundreds of rioters.

In separate incident, a man in his 40's died Friday evening in the town of Al Taybeh in Irbid governorate after receiving several fatal blows to the head by a family member.

The man was rushed to the hospital, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
