Online fraudster arrested for stealing deposits in mobile phone sales scam
The media spokesperson for the Public Security Directorate (PSD) said that personnel from the Cybercrime Unit handled several complaints filed by citizens who had been subjected to electronic financial fraud after contacting an online page advertising mobile phones for sale in installments.
They asked customers to pay an initial amount as a deposit before defrauding them and stealing the money. The Cybercrime Unit managed to identify the suspect who had created the page and used it to defraud citizens.
The spokesperson confirmed that the suspect’s location was identified, and he was raided and arrested. Investigations revealed that three other individuals were involved in the scheme. One of them was arrested, while efforts are ongoing to locate the other two.
A search of the residences of the two arrested suspects uncovered large sums of money, wristwatches and gold jewelry. All seized items were confiscated, and the two suspects will be referred to the judiciary.
The spokesperson reiterated the PSD’s call for citizens to exercise caution when buying and selling online, avoid suspicious and unverified pages, and always verify the legitimacy of sellers before transferring money electronically to avoid falling victim to online financial fraud.
