Samir Al-Rifai appointed chairman of Kingdom University of Medical Sciences board
The Higher Council for Education and Human Resources Development, during its recent meeting chaired by Minister of Education and Human Resources Development Prof. Azmi Mahafzah, approved the formation of the Board of Trustees of the Kingdom University of Medical Sciences for a four-year term, effective August 30, 2026.
The board will be chaired by former Prime Minister Samir Zaid Al-Rifai and will include: Prof. Labib Mohammad Hassan Al-Khadra, former Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research; Prof. Islam Massad, former President of Yarmouk University and former Medical Director of the University of Jordan Hospital; Prof. Ismail Matalqah, President of Ras Al Khaimah Medical and Health Sciences University and former Director of King Abdullah University Hospital; Engineer Bashar Arafah, Chairman of the Electronic Health Solutions (EHS) Company; Mr. Saad Al-Maasher, Chairman of the Jordan Ahli Bank; Mr. Fadi Al-Saeed, Chairman of Kingdom Healthcare and Medical Education; Engineer Khalil Al-Saket, CEO of Depa Group and board member of Kingdom Healthcare and Medical Education; Dr. Tariq Al-Hammouri, former Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply; and Ms. Mona Saketian, Chairwoman of the Women's World Banking Jordan Microfund.
The appointments come at a pivotal stage in the university’s development as it advances toward completing its academic framework and prepares to launch educational operations and welcome its first cohort of medical students in 2027.
The composition of the board reflects the university’s commitment to establishing a strong and well-governed institutional foundation, drawing on diverse expertise to support its growth during the establishment and launch phases.
The Board of Trustees will oversee the university’s strategic direction and institutional and academic development, fostering integration between medical education, clinical training, and scientific research in line with the vision of the Kingdom Healthcare and Medical Education project, which combines these elements within a unified ecosystem.
The university offers a Doctor of Medicine (MD) program developed through an academic partnership with UCL Medical School in London. The six-year program awards students two degrees: a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Basic Medical Sciences at the end of the third year and a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree upon completion of the sixth year.
The partnership enables the university to benefit from UCL Medical School’s expertise in medical education, research, curriculum development, and assessment. UCL Medical School is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year and is ranked among the world’s top ten universities, placing eighth globally in the QS World University Rankings 2027.
The university’s curriculum combines scientific foundations, medical sciences, early clinical training, research, and innovative medical education methods. It also integrates technology and artificial intelligence to enhance learning and prepare students for rapid advancements in healthcare and medical practice while developing the knowledge and skills needed by the next generation of physicians.
The university includes an integrated academic medical center alongside Kingdom University Hospital, creating direct links between medical education, clinical practice, and research. This provides students with a comprehensive environment for learning and practical training, helping them develop the competencies required to keep pace with advances in medical sciences and healthcare practices.
The university is scheduled to welcome its first class of 150 students in September 2027. Preparations are currently underway, including finalizing the academic program, recruiting faculty members, securing accreditation requirements, and preparing for admissions and the start of teaching.
