For the first time in almost a year, the Rafah Crossing has reopened - but still without entry and exit for Gazans.
With Israeli approval, and following American pressure to move to Phase 2 after the return of the last abducted civilian, Ran Gueili, the crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt opened Sunday morning, at this stage in experimental operation, according to Ynet Hebrew newspaper.
According to Palestinian reports, the full protocol for operating the crossing has not yet been provided, and at the same time, discussions are continuing between the mediators and the IDF regarding the arrangements and working procedures.
The actual movement of people will probably begin Monday: about 150 people are expected to leave the Gaza Strip each day, compared to about 50 who will return to it through the crossing, which has been closed continuously for almost the entire duration of the war, since October 7.
It was also reported that return from Egypt to the Gaza Strip will be allowed only to residents who left Gaza during the war. In addition to initial identification and inspection at the Rafah crossing by the European Union delegation, additional inspection and identification will be carried out at a checkpoint operated by the security establishment in the area under IDF control.
The Egyptians will transmit to Israel every day the list of hundreds of people crossing at the crossing for the next day, in both directions.
