AMMONNEWS - Minister of State for Media Affairs and Government Spokesperson Mohammed Momani said that the opening of the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem and the U.S's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, constitute a clear violation of the UN charter, as well as international legitimacy resolutions, especially Security Council resolution 478.

These resolutions he added, affirm that East Jerusalem is an occupied territory and that Jerusalem is a final status issue, that can be resolved through direct negotiations on the basis of international legitimacy resolutions.

Momani said that Jordan rejects the U.S decision which is null and void and has no legal effect, adding that the decision was condemned by Jordan and was rejected by most countries around the world when 128 states voted against it at the UN General Assembly.

"East Jerusalem is the capital of the Palestinian state and as His Majesty King Abdullah II, the custodian of the Islamic and Christian holy sites affirmed, it is the key to peace.

The minister stressed the need for concerted international efforts to solve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on the basis of the two-state solution, and international legitimacy resolutions that guarantee the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital within the pre-June 4, 1967 border.

"Jordan will continue its efforts with the international community to arrive at a solution to the conflict and fulfill the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people," he added.

Momani said that Jordan is continuing work with the Palestinian National Authority, its Arab brethren and the international community to protect Jerusalem and its holy sites, and deal with the repercussions of the US decision on Jerusalem.

The minister also warned of the continuation of unilateral Israeli measures to create a new reality on the ground, commit violations against Al Aqsa Mosque/ Haram Al Sharif and change the legal and historical status quo of Islamic and Christian holy sites that provokes the feelings of Muslims and Christians around the world.
