Students to begin new academic year Sunday

22-08-2026 10:05 AM

Ammon News - Students across Jordan will begin the 2026–2027 academic year on Sunday, in accordance with the school calendar approved and previously announced by the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development.

Teaching staff resumed work a week earlier to complete preparations for the new school year, including readying classrooms and school facilities, preparing and distributing textbooks, organizing class schedules, and registering transferred students.

Earlier, the ministry's Secretary-General, Nawaf Ajarmah, said that the August 23 start date is not a new decision but has been in place for the past three academic years. He explained that the school calendar was designed in line with the Education and Human Resource Development Law, which requires no fewer than 200 actual school days per year.

Ajarmah added that the earlier start date is part of a national program aimed at supporting student learning, addressing learning loss, strengthening basic skills, and improving academic achievement.

He noted that the ministry's decision to continue this approach was based on diagnostic survey results showing improvements in students' academic performance, particularly in reading and mathematics, compared with baseline levels before remedial programs were introduced.

Preparations also include conducting and finalizing supplementary examination results before the start of the school year, as well as completing annual and semester teaching plans to ensure an organized launch of the new academic year.
