Wihdat wins Jordan Cup Winners' Cup

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Hicham Sawalqah - Jordan Cup Champs Wihdat late on Friday won the 29th Cup Winners' Cup after defeating reigning League champs Faisali 1-0 in a game held at Prince Muhammad Stadium in Zarqa.

The game started late at 10:30 PM on Friday, ending with no scores for either team in the original game time. Wihdat's Ahmad Abdul Halim scored the sole goal of the game at the 110th minute in extra time, only to be handed a yellow card for taking off his shirt inside the field, for the second time, getting him kicked off the field for the rest of the match.

Minutes before the original ending time; the game was stopped after spectators threw empty bottles on the field causing police to interfere and contain the spectators to resume the game.

Two Wihdat players, Abdullatif Al Bahdari and Ahmad Kashkash played Friday following their return Friday morning from Mauritania, where they joined the Palestinian Football team in a game against Mauritania. A third Wihdat player who also joined the two in Mauritania, Fahad Attal, stayed on the benches during the first half.

The Cup Winners’ Cup is the only match that groups the League and Cup champions, this time played by Jordan Cup Champs Wihdat and League champs Faisali.

The winner is set to be awarded JD10, 000 and the runner-up JD5, 000.

Wihdat had won the Cup Winners' Cup 9 times since it began in 1981, Friday's win being its 10th win, while Faisali won the title a record 13 times, Ramtha twice, Jazira, Hussein, and Shabab Urdun once each. The Cup was suspended twice, in 1988 and in 1999 based on a decision by the Jordan Football Federation.
