The U.S. Department of State has issued a worldwide security alert urging American citizens to exercise increased caution due to heightened tensions in the Middle East and the potential for unexpected escalation.

In the alert released on Tuesday, the State Department said the global security environment remains complex and warned that Americans currently in the Middle East should remain vigilant and be prepared for possible flight cancellations, periodic airspace closures, and travel disruptions.

The department advised U.S. citizens to closely monitor security alerts issued by U.S. embassies and consulates, follow guidance from local authorities, and stay informed through reliable news sources. Americans outside the Middle East were also encouraged to reconsider travel to or through the region.

The alert noted that U.S. diplomatic facilities, including some located outside the Middle East, have been targeted in recent incidents. It further warned that Iran and groups aligned with Iran could target additional U.S. interests, facilities associated with the United States, or American citizens in various locations around the world.

The State Department encouraged Americans to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive the latest security updates and emergency notifications. Travelers were also urged to review current travel advisories and destination-specific information before making travel plans.
