However, the issue didn't appear to affect all apps. Some parts of Instagram, for instance, loaded normally before displaying an error message.

The problem began around 5 PM Eastern Time (10 PM UK Time), according to Down Detector, a website that tracks outages. The site recorded a surge in error reports at that time, with problems reported worldwide.
