Ammon News - Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs Ayman Safadi met Tuesday with Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro during an official visit to the Portuguese capital.

Safadi conveyed His Majesty King Abdullah II's greetings to Portuguese President António José Seguro and Prime Minister Montenegro, who asked Safadi to relay his greetings to the King.

Montenegro also reiterated Portugal’s appreciation of its relations with Jordan and the Kingdom’s role in promoting regional security and stability.

According to a Foreign Ministry statement, talks covered ways to strengthen friendship and cooperation between Jordan and Portugal across various sectors, in addition to regional and international issues of mutual concern.

The two sides also reviewed opportunities to expand cooperation in several vital sectors.

Discussions addressed regional developments and ongoing efforts to de-escalate tensions, restore calm, and reinforce security and stability on foundations that address the root causes of regional unrest.

Safadi commended Portugal’s support for efforts aimed at promoting security, stability and a just peace in the region, as well as its recognition of the Palestinian state during the high-level week of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly last year.

Safadi also met Deputy Speaker of the Portuguese Parliament and President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Marcos Perestrello. Talks focused on bilateral relations and regional developments.

Safadi stressed Jordan’s commitment to strengthening cooperation in economic, investment, defense, cultural and parliamentary fields to advance bilateral ties.

He highlighted the importance of the Jordan-European investment conference, scheduled to be hosted by the Kingdom later this year, as an opportunity to boost economic cooperation between Jordan and the European Union and encourage Portuguese business participation and investment in Jordan.

On Monday evening, Safadi held expanded talks with Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel on relations and regional developments.

The two ministers also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two countries' foreign ministries on diplomatic training and the exchange of information and documents.
