Ammon News - An unlikely sighting of a blue whale off the coast of Argentina recently delighted conservationists.

In the waters of Argentina's southern Chubut Province, conservationists captured rare evidence of a blue whale during a photo-identification expedition monitoring humpback and sei whales, according to the Buenos Aires Times. It was the first time anyone had ever spotted the species within the Patagonia Azul Provincial Park.

Blue whales have been recorded in other areas of Argentina, but not frequently. The large blue whale caught the team off guard.

"We came across this whale surfacing, but this one was different – it was gigantic, far larger than any we had ever seen," said Tomás Tamagno, a biologist on board during the sighting, per the BA Times.

"We moved a little closer, carefully, to see what it was and found ourselves face to face with a blue whale," he explained further. "Fortunately, we were able to get reasonably close and take some good photographs."

The blue whale is the biggest animal on the planet and is classified as endangered. They live in every ocean except the Arctic Ocean, and face threats from whaling, boats, and fishing gear.

Officials in Argentina said this sighting is a significant milestone for marine conservation and biodiversity in the area, thanks to efforts made by local organizations.

Whales need support to grow their populations, like establishing protected corridors, preventing boating accidents, and reducing ocean noise, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Preservationists use many tools to manage and protect the environment, and cameras have become invaluable to this work.

Whether it's cameras stationed in remote locations, such as suction-cup camera tags on humpback whale calves, or footage from boating expeditions, they can help scientists gauge the health of endangered species and document evidence of rehabilitation efforts.

Regarding this blue whale sighting, Tamagno and his crew celebrated it. "It was an incredible day, surrounded by jumping humpbacks and the appearance of this specimen," he said, per Noticias Ambientales. "We are very happy to have been able to confirm the presence of the blue whale within the Park."
