26-01-2026 11:24 AM

Ammon News - Officials from the Ministries of Water and Irrigation and Environment on Monday held discussions with a German delegation on enhancing cooperation to address the growing impact of climate change on Jordan’s water resources.

Secretary General of the Ministry of Water and Irrigation Dr. Jihad Al-Mahamid and Secretary General of the Ministry of Environment Dr. Omar Arabiyat met with a delegation from the German Federal Academy for Security Policy to review key challenges facing the water sector and explore joint responses to climate-related pressures.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, the talks focused on the direct effects of climate change, including drought, rainfall variability, and increasing stress on limited water resources. The Jordanian side emphasized the importance of adopting innovative and adaptive solutions, while drawing on German technical expertise in water resource management and water-loss reduction.

The meeting also highlighted major strategic projects under implementation, including the National Water Carrier Project, which is expected to supply around 300 million cubic meters of water annually and significantly enhance national water security.

Participants stressed the need for cross-sectoral coordination and environmental protection, underscoring the role of environmental sustainability as a cornerstone for safeguarding water resources amid intensifying regional climate pressures.

The German delegation reaffirmed its commitment to continued technical and institutional support for Jordan, aimed at strengthening resilience to climate change and addressing water scarcity challenges. It also emphasized Jordan’s role as a key partner in environmental and climate-related initiatives. Petra
