Mohamed Salah left out of Liverpool squad for Inter match

09-12-2025 12:07 PM

Ammon News - Mohamed Salah has been omitted from Liverpool’s travelling party for their Champions League fixture at Inter on Tuesday.

The call was taken by sporting director Richard Hughes in conjunction with the club’s ownership and head coach Arne Slot, which would underline their support of the Dutch head coach. The Athletic reported the news earlier on Monday before Liverpool confirmed their travelling party later in the day.

It follows Salah, who trained with his team-mates on Monday, saying on Saturday he felt “thrown under the bus” by Liverpool and revealing that his relationship with Slot has broken down.

Liverpool’s attacking options for the Inter game have been further limited with Cody Gakpo and Federico Chiesa also not travelling to Italy, leaving Slot with Hugo Ekitike, Alexander Isak, Rio Ngumoha and Florian Wirtz as available forwards.

The 33-year-old was speaking after a draw at Leeds United, the third consecutive match in which he was named on Liverpool’s substitutes bench and the second where he did not feature.

Salah left the door open to a January exit from Anfield and claimed he has been made a scapegoat for Liverpool’s struggles this season, insisting “someone does not want me in the club”.

Liverpool do not regard the Egypt international’s exclusion against Inter as a disciplinary action and the step is viewed in isolation, rather than having a bearing on Salah’s possible selection going forward — including for Saturday’s Premier League game at home to Brighton & Hove Albion.

Sources briefed on the situation, speaking anonymously as they were not authorised to do so publicly, say Salah will not face further disciplinary action for his comments and believe the player and club will benefit from a brief period away from selection.

Liverpool insist they remain fully committed to Salah and his contract, which runs through until 2027, while maintaining that the current situation is temporary and can still be turned around.

They are said not currently to be planning for the forward’s exit, nor making plans to use the January transfer window for possible replacements.

Salah said on Saturday: “I said many times before that I had a good relationship with the manager, and all of a sudden, we don’t have any relationship. I don’t know why, but it seems to me, how I see it, that someone doesn’t want me in the club.”
