Ammon News - The Ministry of Water and Irrigation/Water Authority of Jordan announced Wednesday that the volume of treated wastewater reused in agricultural projects across the Kingdom reached 197.504 million cubic meters in 2024, irrigating a total area of 26,676 dunums.

Minister of Water and Irrigation Raed Abu Saud told the Jordan News Agency (Petra) that work is underway on a JD 7 million project to install transmission pipelines to transport treated water in southern Amman, which will expand irrigation networks and increase cultivated areas.

Abu Saud underlined that the government attaches great importance to developing alternative water sources amid the Kingdom’s chronic water scarcity. He added that the ministry continues to advance its strategy to maximize the use of treated water by creating an enabling environment for pioneering individual and collective agricultural initiatives, implemented through associations and institutions across all regions. He pointed out that 397 agreements have been signed with 18 cooperative associations to support these efforts.

He noted that such projects have generated over 2,000 job opportunities and provided sustainable sources of income for local communities. The availability of treated water, he said, represents a renewable resource essential for improving living standards and delivering broad economic benefits.

The minister explained that integrating treated wastewater into the available water supply for restricted agricultural use is carried out through advanced wastewater collection and treatment systems that ensure water quality and safety. He stressed that the Water Authority of Jordan continues to implement innovative projects aimed at improving socio-economic conditions, enhancing the local environment, and supporting livestock breeders by cultivating alfalfa and fodder corn.
