Yemeni Minister: Houthis detain Jordanian UN employee

Yemen's capital Sana'a

Ammon News -

Yemeni Information Minister Muammar al-Eryani confirmed that the Houthi Ansar Allah group continues to detain Luna Shukri (a Jordanian national), the deputy representative of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), for seven days.

In a post on X, al-Eryani said: " This comes amid reports of the militia's intent to try her on trumped-up charges, in a blatant violation of international law and the Geneva Conventions, which ensure the protection of United Nations personnel from any retaliatory practices or violence. The Houthi militia also continues to abduct eight other local UNICEF staff members from its office in the hijacked capital, Sanaa, where they are being interrogated under threat. Additionally, the militia has confiscated the passports of all the organization's employees."

"The continued presence of United Nations offices in areas controlled by the Houthis now poses a grave danger to the personal safety of workers in those offices and threatens the credibility of the United Nations' role. Therefore, we call on all United Nations agencies and international organizations to reconsider the presence of their headquarters in these areas and to take immediate action to relocate them to the interim capital, Aden, where a safe and stable environment allows them to continue providing humanitarian aid and fulfilling their roles effectively," he added.
