Cold weather Wednesday, polar air mass begins Thursday

19-02-2025 08:13 AM

Ammon News - Jordan is set to experience a significant drop in temperatures as a very cold polar air mass moves toward the country on Thursday, accompanied by a low-pressure system centered over Syria, according to a report by the Jordan Meteorological Department.

The report said Wednesday's weather is relatively cold in most regions, with slightly warmer conditions in the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, and Aqaba. High-altitude clouds are expected, while moderate southeasterly winds will shift to northwesterly by the afternoon.

At night, temperatures will drop further, with cold conditions prevailing across most areas. The report added that cloud cover will gradually increase, and scattered showers are expected in the western parts of the country by late night. Winds will be moderate northwesterly, occasionally becoming active.

By Thursday, temperatures will decline sharply as the polar air mass takes hold, bringing cold, cloudy, and rainy conditions across most regions. The report noted that rainfall may be heavy at times in western areas, increasing the risk of flash floods in valleys and low-lying regions.

Strong westerly winds, with gusts exceeding 65 km/h, are expected to raise dust in parts of eastern and southeastern Jordan, significantly reducing visibility. By night, the intensity of rainfall is forecast to decrease, along with a slight reduction in wind speed.

Further temperature drops are expected on Friday, with very cold and mostly cloudy conditions prevailing. The report said intermittent showers will continue in the north, center, and parts of the southwestern regions. Some high-altitude northern and southern mountains may see brief periods of mixed rain and snow. Westerly winds will remain active, causing dust storms in parts of eastern and southeastern Jordan.

The cold spell will persist on Saturday, with the country remaining under the influence of the polar air mass. Temperatures will continue to decline, and the weather will be very cold, cloudy, and rainy in the north, center, and parts of the southwestern regions.

The report added that rain may be heavy at times in the north and center, with initial forecasts indicating the possibility of light, intermittent snowfall over high northern and southern mountain peaks, including the Sharah range. Westerly winds will stay active, with strong gusts occasionally stirring dust in desert areas.

According to the report, today’s maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to range between 16 C and 6 C in East Amman, 14 C and 4 C in West Amman, 13 C and 5 C in the northern highlands, 12 C and 4 C in the Sharah highlands, 18 C and 3 C in the Badia regions, 17 C and 6 C in the plains, 22 C and 9 C in the northern Jordan Valley, 24 C and 11 C in the southern Jordan Valley, 23 C and 12 C at the Dead Sea, and 25 C and 11 C in Aqaba.
