Ammon News - Donald Trump is now officially the 47th president of the United States after taking the oath of office on Monday. Vice President JD Vance was also sworn in.
The ceremony happened in the Capitol Rotunda due to freezing temperatures outside. Former presidents, highly influential tech billionaires and lawmakers were there to watch as one administration ended and another began.
In his speech, Trump attacked the Biden administration and outlined his vision for the country with him at the helm. He said that “a tide of change is sweeping the country” and that “America’s decline is over.”
Here are some of the key lines from the speech:
A “golden age”: At the beginning of his remarks, Trump said that “the golden age of America begins right now,” as he promised to put the country first. After that, however, he pivoted to darker rhetoric and took aim at past political rivalries.
Vision: The new president claimed that today is “liberation day” and says that his electoral victory shows that the country is “rapidly unifying behind our agenda.” Trump said he wants to be remembered as a “peace maker and unifier,” and closed on a message of strength for the country. “We will not be intimidated. We will not be broken and we will not fail,” he said.
Expected executive actions: Trump listed a number of executive actions he plans to sign later today, including declaring a national emergency at the US southern border. Trump also said he would “sign an executive order to immediately stop all government censorship and bring back free speech to America.”
Immigration and border security: Further, on immigration, Trump railed against “dangerous criminals” who he said have entered the US illegally and a lack of border security. He claimed the old administration failed to protect Americans.
Disasters: Following deadly wildfires in Los Angeles and Hurricane Helene in the southeast of the country, Trump warned that the US “can no longer deliver basic services in times of emergency,” claiming without evidence that the Los Angeles wildfires burned “without even a token of defense.”
Energy and the economy: The president reiterated his promise to “drill, baby, drill” as a way to bring down inflation. Trump also promised to roll back clean energy initiatives and “immediately begin the overhaul of our trade system.” This would include tax and tariffs on foreign countries, something he has talked a lot about.
Public health: Trump criticized the US public health system and claimed that the nation has “an education system that teaches our children to be ashamed of themselves, in many cases, to hate our country.”
Attacks on Biden: Trump slammed President Joe Biden, saying his government “cannot manage a simple crisis at home while at the same time stumble into a continuing catalog of catastrophic events abroad.” CNN
