Police Ombudsman Office referred 10 cases to PSD court in 2009

Ammon News - AMMAN The Ombudsman and Human Rights Office of Public Security Department (PSD) referred 10 cases to Police Court in 2009 , said , its director , Brigadier Maher Sheishani, to Petra correspondent on Friday.

This office, established in 2005 as an independent monitoring authority and replaced PSD's Complaints Office, is tasked with following up on citizens’ complaints on in accordance with the relevant international standards.

" The sharp of complaints a year ago, estimated around 12 percent, is attributed to PSD's relentless efforts to qualify its members concomitant with a strict regime of accountability.

No ill-treatment cases were filed against the Kingdom's detention and rehab centers, "he added.

The office, he underlined, maintains close coordination with the National Center for Human Rights (NCHR) and jointly carried out inspection surprise visits to rehab facilities across the country.

Ombudsman offices were originally created in Sweden to protect the rights of individuals where civil servants of the state did not adhere to law.

The Swedish word "ombudsman" means a representative or person whose task is to take care of somebody else's interests.
