Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Christians prayed for unity and peace in the Middle East at the Syriac Orthodox Church in Sweifieh on Tuesday evening.

Worshippers held candles and olive branches during the prayers, attended by archbishops, bishops and their representatives.

Father Rifaat Bader, spokesperson of the Catholic Church in Jordan, said participants prayed for both Christian and national unity.

He noted that worshippers pray for peace every year between January 18 and January 25, each time choosing a different church as the venue.

“We prayed for peace on the eve of the Geneva II talks [on Syria], and that participants will be wise and put an end to the violence. We also prayed that violence will come to an end in Iraq, Lebanon and Egypt,” he told The Jordan Times at the church.

Bader, who is also the director of the Catholic Centre for Studies and Media, said participants prayed that peace will become a reality in Palestine.

Saida Maki, who attends the prayers every year, said the turnout on Tuesday was good.

“Every year, the number of participants increases,” she added.

Ruwaida Roumanous said she came to pray for Christian unity.

“I also came to pray that peace will prevail in the region, especially in Syria. Although I do not think that a political solution will resolve the dispute, I hope that violence will come to an end,” she added.
