Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Over a thousand young men rioted in the city of Salt on Tuesday, blocking the main Amman-Salt road in both directions, burning tires, and throwing rocks at anti-riot police in protest of the police's narrative over the death of a local resident.
Muhammad Rahahleh died on Sunday in a collision between a car he was driving and another while he was being chased by police, the Public Security Directorate (PSD) said.
Rahahleh's family refused the police narrative which stated that the man who was wanted by police was killed by a private vehicle during the chase.
The family blamed police for Rahahleh's death and accused security forces of killing him.
The governor of Balqaa Fawaz Ersheidat on Tuesday afternoon headed to the Rahahleh tribe's Diwan in the city of Salt to try to contain the backlash from family members, but the family refused his mediation and asked him to leave.
The Rahahleh family said that they will give security authorities two hours to disclose the cause of their son's death, threatening to escalate their protest.
Meanwhile, riots police and security forces are working to contain the riots and used tear gas to disperse the crowds, which eye-witnesses said are increasing in numbers reaching over 1,500.
