AMMONNEWS - Foreign Minister, Ayman Safadi, said Israel has to stop the annexation and commit to the two-state solution, which guarantees the establishment of the independent Palestinian state with the occupied Jerusalem as its capital on the pre-June 4, 1967 borders, in order to resolve the conflict and establish a just and comprehensive peace.

"The occupation is the basis of the conflict and ending it according to the two-state solution based on international legitimacy decisions, the signed agreements and the Arab Peace Initiative, is the only way to resolve the conflict and achieve just peace," Safadi said in in a meeting with Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), Saeb Erekat, in Jericho on Tuesday.

Safadi and Erekat underlined the need for international efforts to join hands to carry out an effective action to sponsor and launch negotiations and reach a two-state solution in accordance with international law, as they warned that the alternative to that is to deepen the conflict and destroy all opportunities to achieve a just peace, which constitute a regional and international necessity.

Erekat expressed appreciation for the Kingdom's steadfast stances and its key role, led by His Majesty King Abdullah, in supporting the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights, especially their right to freedom and an independent, sovereign and viable state.

Erekat also stressed the importance of the Hashemite custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, safeguardingand and preserving their Arab, Islamic and Christian identity and the existing historical and legal status qou.

Both officials highlighted developments related to the Palestinian cause, and said they would continue consultations and coordination as per directives of King Abdullah and President Mahmoud Abbas.
