Minister says job creation key to spur growth

AMMONNEWS - Minister of Planning and International Cooperation and Minister of State for Economic Affairs Dr. Mohammad Al-Assas said that economic growth and job creation are the only way to address economic challenges facing Jordan.

The minister underlined the importance of attracting foreign investments to the Kingdom to improve services provided to citizens and strengthen the economy.

This came during a meeting with Chief Economist of the World Bank Pinelopi "Penny" Koujianou Goldberg on the sidelines of his participation in the annual meetings of the World Bank. The meeting focused on Jordan's economy and means to propel growth.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, Al-Assas participated in a high-level ministerial meeting of the World Bank Initiative on Human Capital, which was chaired by the Bank's Vice President for Human Development, Annette Dixon. The initiative focuses on the importance of countries investing in human capital through improved education, health and social services.

The minister highlighted Jordan's progress towards the implementation of the National Strategy for Human Resources Development 2016-2025. He also touched on the reforms undertaken by the Jordanian government to enhance the participation of women in the labor market.

He also pointed to the role played by the Kingdom in hosting Syrian refugees and providing them with health and education services, noting that the number of Syrian refugee students enrolled in schools is about 134,000.

Additionally, the planning minister held a meeting with Vice President and Corporate Secretary at the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank Sir Daniel Grian Alexander, discussing Jordan's economic reforms and areas of cooperation.
